LINCOLN, NE – Karter Otte, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln junior and Orchard native, is proving that rural work ethic and modern entrepreneurship are a winning combination. Otte’s venture, Pickup Lines Striping, recently secured a second-place finish and a $12,500 donor-funded award at the 39th annual UNL New Venture Competition, a prestigious event that previously launched global tech giant Hudl.
Pickup Lines Striping was founded to solve a common frustration for Nebraska business owners: rural Nebraska neglect and high minimums. While large contractors often prioritize massive industrial contracts and charge thousands just to show up, Otte’s company specializes in high-quality parking lot striping, road and curb marking, ADA compliance, and fire lane marking for small-to-mid-sized retail lots and commercial properties in both rural and urban Nebraska.
“Growing up in a farm and ranch family I quickly learned that it takes hustle to make it in business,” says Otte. “I realized small business owners and property managers in both rural towns and cities like Lincoln were being ignored by the big guys because their lots weren’t ‘big enough.’ We’re here to bridge that gap and serve rural Nebraska like nobody else is.”
With a portfolio of over 50 completed projects—including work for Madonna and the DMV as well as rural schools—Otte plans to use the prize money to upgrade equipment and expand his team. Pickup Lines Striping offers flexible after-hours scheduling to minimize disruption to business operations.
